LOWELL, Mass.—An annual World Cup-style soccer tournament in Lowell created for Massachusetts immigrant groups will crown a champion this weekend.
The 20 team competition is scheduled to continue Saturday at Lowell's Cawley Stadium with knockout stages. The final is slated for Sunday.
The tournament has attracted immigrant players from countries including Somalia, Mexico, Brazil and Cambodia.
Under the rules of the tournament, 17 of a team's 22 players must be from the country of the team, or be children or grandchildren of a person from that country. The winner gets $600 and a replica of the World Cup trophy.
ONE Lowell, an immigrant advocacy group, started the annual competition four years ago as a way to bring the area's diverse immigrant groups together.
