US hospital ship to visit Vietnam

The USNS Mercy, a US Navy hospital ship, will dock in Vietnam May 31 to provide medical, dental, veterinary and engineering aid to partner nations in Southeast Asia and Oceania.

Under the Pacific Partnership program, which is scheduled to take place between June and September, the ship will travel Southeast Asia including Cambodia, Vietnam, Timor Leste, and Indonesia. Meanwhile, other US Navy ships will anchor in Palau and Papua New Guinea.

The program aims to improve the ability of the US and regional countries to prepare for and better respond to disasters, such as pandemic illness, typhoons, earthquakes and tsunamis.

Over the past four years, Pacific Partnership has provided a variety of medical, dental, educational and preventive medicine services to more than 150,000 patients in 10 countries. More than 70 engineering projects in more than a dozen countries have included school refurbishment and construction of entirely new clinics for remote villages. Read more!
