Cambodia arrests 3 army generals for involvement in armed robberies

Three army generals were arrested in Phnom Penh on Tuesday for involvement in armed robberies and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and sent to Battambang province on Wednesday, Sao Sokha, military police commander of Cambodia confirmed to Xinhua by phone.

"We arrested them in Phnom Penh city according to the arrest warrants from Battambang provincial court, so we sent them back to Battambang province today because they committed crimes there ( some 250 kilometers northwest of the capital)," he said.

One-star general Kheang Savorn, 46, two-star general Outh Sakhan, 48, and two-star general Men Saran, 49, were believed to have been involved in "weapon robberies" and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, Sao Sokha said.

Meanwhile, the arrest warrants signed by investigating judge Du Sok Sa Rin from the Battambang provincial court also confirmed that the court accused the three generals of being involved in 18 gun robberies since 2005. Details of the accusation has been disclosed yet.

If found guilty of such crimes, they will face 25 years of imprisonment.
The first general belongs to the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, while the other two are supporters of the co-ruling Funcinpec Party. Cambodia currently has 619 generals nationwide.
